Brief summary of the International Conference "East-West - 2019"

 

On 6-7 June 2019 Ufa held the X International Conference on Ophthalmology "East-West". The organizers of the Conference were the Ufa Eye Research Institute with the cooperation with the Academy of Science and the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Bashkortostan.

There is a growing interest in the Conference each year, more and more guests come to Ufa to participate in it. A new record was established this year - more than 50 foreign ophthalmologists from European countries (UK, Germany, France, Switzerland, Latvia), Asia (India, North Cyprus, Turkey, Japan) and Africa (Namibia, Ethiopia) presented their reports in the "East-West - 2019" Conference. CIS countries were represented by specialists from Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Tadjikistan. The total number of participants reached more than 1200 people. 


During the Opening Ceremony of the Conference the participants were welcomed by Irina Kononova, the Deputy Minister of Health of the Republic of Bashkortostan and Mukharram Bikbov, the Chairman of the Conference Organizing Commitee, the Director of the Ufa Eye Research Institute. Foreign distinguished guests also said their words of greeting: Professor Shuichi Yamamoto spoke on behalf of Asian ophthalmologists, Professor Jost Jonas - on behalf of European ophthalmologists and Dr. Helena Ndume - on behalf of African ophthalmologists. 

The Conference had an intense programme: for these 2 days more than 140 reports and 40 e-posters were presented during 17 sessions and 8 satellite symposia.

 
Every year the hosts of the Conference are trying to enrich the format and add something new. This year was no exeption. For the first time for two full days there were lecture sessions of foreign ophthalmologists. Turkic Republics Ophthalmology Society had 7 sessions where the leading ophthalmologists presented their reports on diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases.

Japan ophthalmologists presented the result of their work in the field of retina pathology. Reports of the ophthalmologists from Namibia and Ethiopia on cataract and glaucoma tratment in these countries aroused a great interest. 

For the first time in Russia within the Conference there were 4 academic lecture sessions of the most famous ophthalmologists in the world. So Professor Rupert Bourne from Cambridge University (UK) presented new data and tendencies in prevelence and causes of global visual impairment. He also noted the results of the international project conducted by the Ufa Eye Research Institute «The Ural Eye and Medical Study».

Professor Farhad Hafezi from University of Zurich (Switzerland), the most authoritative corneal cross-linking specialist presented the results of his research and conducted a master class on corneal pathology treatment for doctors.

The problems of myopia was highlighted in the fascinating report by Professor Jost Jonas from Heidelberg University (Germany). 

Dan Milea, the leading neuro-ophthalmologist in the world gave an incredible interactive lecture session presenting the results of diagnosis and treatment of patients with complex neuroophthalmic pathologies and involving the audience into case solving and discussion.

Along with foreign lecture sessions there were lectures of Russian ophthalmologists which covered the most topical issues of diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma, cataract, retinal, corneal and vitreous humour pathology etc. Some significant issues were discussed at satellite symposia. 

The highest skill of the leading Russian and Ufa surgeons could be seen during Live Surgery. A training for specialists within WETLAB system was provided:188 people from different parts of Russia and near abroad attended the courses on corneal cross-linking, phacoemulsification and intravitreal injections technic.

The Conference proceedings were published in the form of special issue of the "Ophthalmology" journal included in the list of Higher Attestation Commission (VAK) and in 4 issues of the "Point of View. East-West" journal.

Traditionally there was an exhibition of modern ophthalmic equipment and products of leading companies. The Ufa Eye Research Institute also presented its innovative ophthalmic and printed products.   

The highest scientific and organization level of the "East-West" Conference, its scale and popularity, hospitality of Ufa ophthalmologists showed a great potential of the Ufa Eye Research Institute and were appreciated by the guests.
